My Sister-in-Law Announced Her Pregnancy At My Wedding Reception

My wedding reception was going perfectly.

The food was good.

Everyone was laughing.

My husband gave a beautiful speech.

Then my sister-in-law asked for the microphone.

I thought she wanted to thank us.

Instead, she announced:

“We have a little surprise. We’re having a baby!”

Everyone screamed.

People stood up.

Someone started crying.

For about five minutes, my wedding reception became her pregnancy announcement.

I smiled because I didn’t know what else to do.

Then my husband leaned over and said:

“Did you know about this?”

I said no.

He looked genuinely confused.

Later that night, I confronted her.

She said:

“I thought you’d be happy for me.”

I told her I was happy for her.

I just wasn’t happy that she chose my wedding to announce it.

She accused me of being jealous.

Then my mother-in-law joined the argument.

She said I should be honored that such an important announcement happened at our wedding.

That was when I discovered something.

My sister-in-law had already planned a pregnancy announcement party for the following weekend.

Invitations had been sent.

A photographer had been booked.

Everything.

So why announce it at my wedding?

Apparently, she had found out that several relatives were traveling for my wedding.

She wanted everyone together.

The photographer she’d hired had even been at my reception.

She wasn’t improvising.

She had planned it.

The next morning, my husband called his sister.

She finally admitted she wanted to make sure her announcement got more attention than another family member’s announcement.

I asked who.

She said:

“Our cousin.”

Apparently, our cousin had also recently become pregnant.

My SIL wanted to announce first.

She had turned my wedding into a competition I didn’t even know existed.

My husband and I decided not to attend her baby shower.

My mother-in-law called us selfish.

Then something unexpected happened.

The cousin she was competing with sent me a message.

She said:

“Don’t worry. She did the same thing at my engagement party.”

Apparently, my wedding wasn’t the first event she’d hijacked.

It was just the biggest.
