I Found Out My Best Friend Has Been Dating My Ex Behind My Back For 8 Months

I found out my best friend had been dating my ex because Instagram showed me a picture she thought I would never see.

The worst part?

The photo wasn’t even hidden.

It was sitting on my best friend’s public story.

Eight months earlier, I had been devastated over my breakup.

Now I realize I was the only person in the situation who didn’t know the relationship had already started.

My ex, Daniel, and I dated for almost four years.

We broke up after months of arguing about our future.

He wanted to move across the country for work.

I didn’t.

Neither of us was willing to compromise.

The breakup was painful, but it wasn’t explosive.

There was no cheating.

No screaming.

No dramatic revenge.

Just two people realizing they wanted different lives.

My best friend, Rachel, was there for everything.

She brought wine to my apartment.

She listened to me cry.

She told me Daniel was an idiot.

She even said, “If he ever tries to come back, I’m going to personally block his number.”

I believed her.

Three months after the breakup, Daniel occasionally started liking my posts.

Rachel told me not to read into it.

Then she started mentioning him less.

I didn’t notice.

Or maybe I didn’t want to.

Eight months after our breakup, I was scrolling through Instagram at about midnight.

I saw a familiar jacket.

It was Daniel’s.

I clicked the story.

There was Rachel standing beside him at a restaurant.

They were smiling.

The caption said:

“Finally making it official ❤️”

I froze.

I stared at the screen for maybe thirty seconds.

Then I checked the date.

The photo was from that evening.

I called Rachel.

No answer.

I called Daniel.

No answer.

Then Rachel texted me.

“Can we talk tomorrow?”

That sentence told me everything.

I didn’t sleep.

The next morning she came to my apartment.

She looked terrified.

“How long?”

She started crying.

“Eight months.”

I actually felt dizzy.

“Eight months?”

She nodded.

“You started dating him three months after we broke up.”

“Yes.”

“And you told me he was an idiot.”

“I know.”

“You listened to me cry about him while you were dating him?”

“I know.”

“Why?”

She couldn’t answer.

Eventually she said, “I was scared you’d hate me.”

I laughed.

“You were right.”

She said they hadn’t planned it.

According to her, Daniel contacted her about a month after the breakup.

They started talking.

Then secretly meeting.

Then dating.

She claimed she intended to tell me.

Eventually.

That word made me furious.

Eventually.

She had eight months.

Eight months of birthdays.

Eight months of coffee.

Eight months of conversations.

Eight months of asking me how I was doing.

And every single time she knew.

I asked whether Daniel had been talking to me during their relationship.

She looked down.

“Yes.”

“How often?”

“Sometimes.”

I felt sick.

I remembered every time he had texted me.

“Hope you’re doing okay.”

“Miss the old days sometimes.”

“Your mom’s birthday is coming up. Hope you’re okay.”

I thought he was being nostalgic.

He was apparently dating my best friend while keeping me emotionally attached.

That was when I stopped crying.

I called Daniel.

This time he answered.

“I’m sorry.”

I said, “Don’t apologize. Explain.”

He told me he never meant to hurt me.

I asked why he had kept contacting me.

He said, “I wanted us to stay friends.”

I laughed.

“You wanted to stay friends while dating Rachel?”

He went silent.

Then he said something that changed my perspective.

“I didn’t know she hadn’t told you.”

I immediately called Rachel.

She had apparently told Daniel that she had already spoken to me.

She hadn’t.

That meant she had been lying to both of us.

Or at least that’s what she claimed later.

The truth came out slowly.

She was afraid I’d cut her off if I knew.

So she created a second life.

She had a second Instagram account where she posted pictures with Daniel.

She told mutual friends they were dating.

She even met his parents.

Meanwhile, she continued being my best friend.

One of our mutual friends eventually admitted she had known for months.

That hurt almost as much.

I wasn’t just betrayed by Rachel.

I was surrounded by people who had decided I didn’t deserve the truth.

I stopped speaking to all of them.

A few weeks later, Daniel contacted me again.

He said things weren’t working with Rachel.

Apparently, once the secret was gone, the relationship changed.

He asked whether I would consider meeting for coffee.

I said no.

Then he asked if I was angry because he had moved on.

I told him:

“I’m not angry that you moved on. I’m angry that you made sure I was the last person to know.”

I never spoke to him again.

Rachel sent me a long letter.

She apologized.

She said she had been jealous of my relationship with Daniel and always wondered what it would feel like to be with him.

I read the entire thing.

Then deleted it.

People sometimes assume betrayal happens because someone doesn’t love you.

I don’t think that’s always true.

Sometimes people love you and still make selfish choices.

Rachel may have loved me.

Daniel may have cared about me.

But when they had to choose between doing the right thing and doing what they wanted, they chose themselves.

And that’s all I needed to know.

I haven’t had a best friend since.

I’m okay with that.

I’d rather have an empty seat beside me than give it to someone who secretly thinks I’m stupid enough not to notice they’re sitting there with a knife.
