My Mother-In-Law Told Everyone I’m Infertile After I Said We’re Waiting To Have Kids

My husband and I decided not to have children yet.
We’re young.
We wanted to travel, save money and enjoy being married.
It wasn’t anyone else’s business.
Unfortunately, my mother-in-law disagreed.
At dinner one night, she asked when we were going to have kids.
I said:
“Not yet.”
She looked disappointed.
I thought that was the end of it.
The next Sunday, I received a message from a woman I barely knew.
She said:
“I’ll be praying for you.”
I had no idea what she meant.
Then another person sent me a message.
Then another.
Eventually, my husband called his mother.
That’s when we found out what she had told everyone.
She had told her church that I was infertile.
Apparently, she said we had been trying for years and that I was devastated.
People were praying for me.
Some were sending advice.
One woman even recommended a specialist.
I was humiliated.
I confronted my mother-in-law.
She said:
“I was just asking people to pray.”
I told her I wasn’t infertile.
She replied:
“You don’t know that.”
That was the final straw.
My husband demanded that she correct the story publicly.
She refused.
Instead, she said we’d embarrassed her by “making private family matters public.”
Then my father-in-law called us.
He told us something shocking.
My mother-in-law had been telling relatives for years that she wanted grandchildren.
Apparently, she believed if people thought I couldn’t have children, everyone would pressure my husband to leave me.
I couldn’t believe it.
She wasn’t gossiping.
She was trying to create a narrative where our marriage looked doomed.
My husband cut contact with her.
Two months later, she finally admitted why.
She was afraid her son would move away with me permanently.
She thought having a baby would keep him close.
When that didn’t happen, she invented a medical problem she could use to make everyone feel sorry for her.
I haven’t spoken to her since.
And oddly enough, the church stopped messaging me.
Because once they learned the truth, they started asking her questions instead.
