My Husband’s Mother Has A Key To Our House And Lets Herself In Whenever She Wants

I knew my mother-in-law didn’t respect boundaries.
I didn’t know she was entering our house while we were at work.
At first, I noticed small things.
Furniture moved.
Laundry folded differently.
Food missing from the refrigerator.
I thought my husband was doing it.
Then one afternoon I came home early.
My mother-in-law was sitting in our living room.
She looked at me and said:
“Oh. You’re home.”
Like I was the intruder.
I asked how she got inside.
She said my husband gave her a key.
I was furious.
We argued.
My husband insisted she only came over occasionally.
Then I noticed something else.
Our bedroom sheets had been changed.
I asked him about it.
He said his mother had helped with laundry.
A week later, I found her sleeping in our bed.
That was the moment I changed the locks.
She exploded.
She accused me of disrespecting her.
Then she said something that made no sense.
“You don’t understand what I’m protecting.”
I asked her what she meant.
She refused to explain.
Later that night, my husband finally confessed.
His mother wasn’t entering our house because she wanted to control me.
She believed someone had been following us.
She had found strange marks around our back door and thought someone had been trying to break in.
She had secretly been checking the house whenever we were gone.
I felt guilty.
Until the police came.
Because the marks weren’t from an attempted break-in.
They were from a key.
Someone had been testing our lock.
The police checked our security footage.
Three months earlier, a man had been walking past our house repeatedly.
My mother-in-law had actually noticed him before we did.
The disturbing part?
He wasn’t a stranger.
He was my husband’s former business partner.
Apparently, he blamed my husband for losing thousands of dollars and had been watching the house.
My mother-in-law had crossed every boundary imaginable.
But she may have accidentally prevented something much worse.
