I FOUND OUT MY PARENTS HAVE BEEN TELLING FAMILY MEMBERS I’M IN A CULT

The first person who asked me was my aunt.

“Are you safe?”

I laughed.

She didn’t.

She looked genuinely worried.

She asked whether anyone was controlling where I lived or who I talked to.

I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about.

Then she said:

“Your parents told us you’re in a cult.”

I thought she’d misunderstood something.

I don’t attend church regularly.

My parents are very religious.

I’ve also become politically different from them over the years.

But a cult?

That was absurd.

I called my mother.

She immediately became emotional.

She said she was worried about me.

I asked her exactly what she’d told everyone.

She denied saying anything serious.

Then I started getting strange messages from relatives.

One cousin asked whether I needed help leaving my “group.”

Another offered to let me stay at her house.

Someone even asked whether I was allowed to use my phone.

I realized this wasn’t a misunderstanding.

My parents had been telling people a story.

So I started asking questions.

Eventually, a family friend sent me screenshots.

My parents had told relatives that I’d “changed completely.”

They said I’d stopped following the family.

They claimed my new friends were influencing me.

Then came the biggest accusation.

They said I had given money to a mysterious organization.

I had no idea what they were talking about.

Then I realized where that part came from.

I’d made a $200 donation to a political organization online.

My parents had seen the receipt because it had accidentally been mailed to their house after I used their address for one old account.

They had apparently taken that one donation and turned it into a story about me being financially controlled by a group.

But there was another clue.

My cousin told me my parents had asked several relatives to “intervene” before I became unreachable.

That was when I understood the real purpose.

They weren’t trying to save me.

They were trying to convince everyone that if I cut contact with them, it would be because I’d been brainwashed.

So if I ever set boundaries, they already had an explanation.

I confronted them.

My father finally admitted they’d been telling people.

He said it was because they were afraid of losing me.

I told him that accusing me of joining a cult wasn’t concern.

It was character assassination.

After that, I stopped defending myself to every relative.

Instead, I sent one simple message:

“I’m safe. I’m not in a cult. I’ve simply made some choices my parents don’t agree with.”

The strange thing is that several relatives apologized.

Apparently, once they heard my side, the story fell apart immediately.

My parents wanted everyone to believe I’d been brainwashed.

In the end, the only thing they managed to prove was how badly they wanted control over the narrative.

And maybe that was the real reason they needed everyone to believe I wasn’t capable of making my own decisions.
