MY BEST FRIEND’S HUSBAND HAS BEEN SENDING ME INAPPROPRIATE MESSAGES AND SHE BLAMES ME

The first message was harmless enough.
At least, that’s what I told myself.
My best friend’s husband sent me a text late one evening asking how I was doing.
I replied politely.
A few days later, he messaged again.
This time, he complimented my appearance.
I ignored it.
Then the messages became more personal.
He started telling me that he wished his wife were “more like me.”
That was when I stopped responding.
I considered telling my best friend immediately, but I was terrified she’d misunderstand.
Eventually, he sent a message that crossed a line.
I took screenshots.
Then I called my friend.
I expected her to be angry at him.
Instead, she became angry at me.
She asked why I had been talking to him.
I showed her the screenshots.
She barely looked at them.
“He says you’re flirting with him.”
I couldn’t believe it.
I told her I had never encouraged him.
She said I was trying to destroy her marriage.
Then she blocked me.
Our friendship of twelve years disappeared in one phone call.
For weeks, I wondered if I should have handled things differently.
Then another friend contacted me.
She told me something strange.
Apparently, my friend’s husband had been telling people that I had a crush on him.
That made no sense.
So I checked the old messages again.
There was something I’d missed.
Every time he sent something inappropriate, he deleted his message shortly afterward.
But because I had taken screenshots, I still had the evidence.
Then I noticed the dates.
The messages always appeared shortly before arguments between him and my best friend.
He was deliberately creating situations where she would see me as the problem.
I eventually sent everything to my friend.
She didn’t respond.
Three days later, she called.
She was crying.
She had checked his phone.
He’d been sending similar messages to several women.
And apparently, he’d been telling each of them that his wife was “controlling” and that he was planning to leave her.
The final twist was that he had used the same story with all of them.
My friend apologized.
But the damage was already done.
She eventually left him.
We’re slowly rebuilding our friendship.
But I learned something I’ll never forget.
Sometimes the person causing the betrayal isn’t the person everyone is blaming.
And sometimes manipulation works simply because the liar tells the story first.
