My Mother-In-Law Planned A Family Vacation And Booked It Using My Credit Card

My mother-in-law loves family vacations.

Normally, I don’t mind.

But this year, she planned a trip without asking me.

She sent everyone the itinerary.

Flights.

Hotels.

Restaurants.

Excursions.

It looked incredibly expensive.

I assumed my husband had paid for it.

Then my credit card statement arrived.

$8,000.

I almost dropped my phone.

I called my husband.

He looked confused.

Then I asked my mother-in-law.

She said:

“Oh, I found the card in your husband’s wallet.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

She had apparently taken a photo of my credit card while going through his wallet.

Then she used it to book the entire family vacation.

Without asking me.

She said:

“I assumed you’d be happy to contribute.”

I immediately disputed the charges.

Then I discovered something else.

She had booked rooms for twelve people.

Not six.

She had invited relatives I had never met.

She expected us to pay for everyone.

I confronted her.

She said:

“It’s only money.”

My husband finally took my side.

We canceled everything we could.

Some reservations were non-refundable.

My MIL agreed to reimburse us.

She didn’t.

We threatened legal action.

Then she finally admitted why she had done it.

She had promised the family that my husband and I would pay.

She wanted to look generous without spending her own money.

She had apparently been telling relatives for months that we were financially comfortable.

The $8,000 wasn’t even the worst part.

She had also given the hotel my phone number as the emergency contact.

When the hotel called about another unpaid charge, I realized she was still booking things.

Apparently, she had saved my card information.

I canceled the card.

Changed every shared password.

And told my husband that from now on, his wallet was staying in his possession.

My MIL called me controlling.

I told her:

“You’re right. I’m controlling one thing now.”

“My credit card.”
