I Discovered My Roommate Has Been Charging Her Boyfriend’s Rent To My Utility Accounts

My roommate’s boyfriend had been staying with us for months.
At first, I didn’t care.
Then he started staying every night.
Then he moved clothes into our apartment.
Then he started using my bathroom.
I finally told my roommate he needed to contribute.
She said:
“He doesn’t live here.”
I knew that wasn’t true.
Then the electricity bill doubled.
I checked the account.
That’s when I noticed something strange.
The utility account was in my name.
But the payment method had been changed.
I asked my roommate about it.
She said she had been paying the bills.
Except she hadn’t.
She had been charging his portion to my account.
Apparently, she had added his expenses to my utility payments and planned to “settle up later.”
I demanded she pay me back.
She became angry.
Then she admitted something worse.
Her boyfriend had never paid rent.
Not once.
He had been living in our apartment for four months.
I calculated the additional costs.
Rent.
Electricity.
Water.
Internet.
Food.
It was almost $3,000.
I told them both to leave.
My roommate said I couldn’t kick her boyfriend out because he was “basically family.”
I said:
“Then family can find another apartment.”
They moved out.
A month later, I received a collection notice for one of the utility accounts.
Apparently, my roommate had opened a second account using my information.
I reported it.
The utility company investigated.
She had used my name because her boyfriend had poor credit and she couldn’t qualify for another account.
That was when I realized this wasn’t a misunderstanding.
She had intentionally used my identity because it was convenient.
I changed every password.
Froze my credit.
Closed every shared account.
And moved out.
The worst part?
She later messaged me saying I had “destroyed our friendship over money.”
I didn’t destroy anything.
I just stopped letting someone else spend mine.
